Marsrail (or the Railway Corporation of Mars) is the central transport provider for inter-dome travel on Mars. Marsrail was founded on the 12th June 2113 by the amalgamation of district based metro companies, which prior to complete amalgamation were regulated by the Corporation.

Marsrail is a Statutory Corporation under the auspices of the Socioeconomic Department of the Colonial Administration of Mars. The current Chief Executive of Marsrail is Jonathan Messer.

History

Amalgamation (2113 - 2115)

Prior to the establishment of the Railway Corporation of Mars the responsibility for the provision and regulation of interdome and intraregional transport fell to the hands of the private sector, the following companies were amalgamated to form Marsrail in 2113

  • Olympiarail (Serving Olympia and Tharsis)
  • Southern Highlands District Railway (Serving the Southern Highlands, Mariner, Argyre)
  • Rutherford Central Railway (Serving Rutherford, Hellas, Elysium)
  • Transmartian Railway (Serving Nostrum, Southern Highlands, Tharsis, Boreum)

The decision to amalagamate was taken by Administrative Direction #110, as passed by the Colonial Parliament due to the after effects of the Martian Economic Crisis and the unsustainable rise in costs of operating profitloosing railway services of essential need to their regions, though the process of amalgamation was done in a phased way, with commuter interregional routes being taken over before the less profitable intraregional services.

Expansion (2115 - Present)

As of 2115 Marsrail was responsible for linking up regional capitols, with the remmannts of the regional companies still serving the other cities. This decision was made as apart of the Phased Amalgamation approach was specified in Direction #110. By 2215 this process was completed and the regional companies were disbanded.

The expansion of Marsrail by taking over the intraregional services saw a significant increase in revenue for commuter routes which in turn subsidize the less profitable services provided under the Universal Service Obligation.

The Universal Service Obligation

As a Statutory Corporation, Marsrail is bound to provide a universal service to all parts of Mars in order to ensure interconectivity and ease of transportation, this includes the running of unprofitable routes, such intraregional services that are used to a significantly lesser degree than the intercity services.

Divisions

Marsrail is made up of three directorates, the directors of which form up the Railways Board, which is responsible for the administration of the corporation.

Maintenance & Repair

This is the largest directorate of the Corporation responsible for the maintenance of rolling stock and trackways, as well as buildings owned by Marsrail. The current director of Maintenance & Repair is the Chief Maintenance Officer, Jessica Roberts.

General Service & Ticketing

This the directorate responsible for the operation of ticketing offices and conductor services aboard services in operation, as well as the enforcement of ticketing rules through the Revenue Inspection Branch, this is the second most staffed branch. The current director of General Service & Ticketing is the Chief Services Officer, Leo Weyman.

The Revenue Inspection Branch

Revenue Inspectors make up the bulk of the General Service and Ticketing Directorate, these Inspectors who operate in plainclothes are responsible for the enforcement of ticketing rules and ensuring that those on Marsrail services are in possession of a valid ticket or Travel Authority Certificate. This branch is the subject of much ridicule by the press due to their supposed "ineffective" nature, despite the fact that the Branch has saved Marsrail over 1.2 Million credits since it's formation.

Administrative Services

The Administrative Services Directorate is responsible for the provision of administrative services ranging from general provision of rolling stock manufacture from coachworks to accountancy and auditing. The current director of Administrative Services is the Chief Administration Officer, Glenn Morganson.
