The Sol System, also known as the Solar System, is the gravitationally bound system of planets orbiting the star Sol. The system consists of eight major planets with numerous other satellites, the planets being Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. Larger of the non-planetary bodies bound to Sol are the satellites such as Pluto, Makemake and Haumea, but are considered dwarf planets. The Sol System was formed 4.6 billion years ago following the gravitational collapse of an interstellar dust cloud. While typically the collapse of a dust cloud would lead to the formation of only one star or a number of asteroids, Sol retained a protoplanetary disk after forming which gradually coalesced into forming each of the eight planets known to humanity today, including their homeworld, Earth.
The Sol System is divided into three regions - the Inner System, comprised of Sol and the inner terrestrial planets, separated by the Asteroid Belt from the Outer System, with the Asteroid Belt and the gas giants. The furthest and final region of the Sol System is the Kuiper-Oort Region, consisting of the Kuiper Belt, a large system of asteroids similar to the inner Asteroid Belt, and the Oort Cloud, a vast cloud of debris and plantesimals 200,000 astronomical units away from Sol. The Oort Cloud is considered the end of the Sol System as it is where Sol's gravitational pull loses effect. The dwarf planets of Pluto, Makemake and Haumea are within the Kuiper-Oort Region.
Of the eight planets in the Sol System, four are thoroughly inhabited, hosting permanent populations and settlements, those being Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and it's Galilean moons. Other planets in the Sol System, such as the outer gas giants, are colonised but do not possess a large enough population, and therefore are not considered inhabited.

Today, Sol plays a large role in not only providing light to the entire system, but also as a source of energy. Many cities on Earth, Mars and Venus utilise sunlight and convert it into power, and nearly every space station is equipped with solar panels for drawing energy from Sol.

Sol, being the reason that life has been able to evolve on Earth, has been everpresent in all manners of life on Earth since prehistoric times. Sol has been the subject of centuries of religious worship, with nearly every human culture that has existed on Earth worshipping the warmth of Sol in some manner. Many depicted Sol as an deity and individual - the ancient Egyptians depicted Sol through Ra, the god the Sun, the ancient Norse depicted it as Sól, a God embodying the Sun and it's favours, and the ancient Aztecs worshipped Tonatiuh, the god of the Sun similarly to Ra.
The birth of Sol occured in a massive gravitational collapse of a dust cloud spanning lightyears across, forming a number of stars likely including Proxima and Alpha Centauri alongside Sol. The centre of mass in the region of the dust cloud collapse which would become Sol did so as heat formed and increased with the mass collecting via mutual gravitational pull, eventually forming not only Sol, a star fueled by the nuclear fission which formed from the collection of mass, but also a protoplanetary disc out of the mass which did not end up conglomerating into Sol. Within this protoplanetary disc, mass began to attract eachother and coalesce into new astronomical bodies much like Sol, forming the planets of the Sol System.

Mercury was first travelled to in 2057, three years before the Jupiter Expedition by a fleet of only three ships. The purpose of the Mercury Mission was to first, observe the planet up close, and second, land 3 rovers on the surface of the planet to examine it up close. The mission was successful and the fleet landed 3 rovers, Harriot, Galileo and Vulcan to survey the surface of the planet. Mercury went largely untouched until the early 2103, where the Sol Defence Corps established the Rey Diaz Station in geosynchronous orbit, finally making Mercury a utilized planet under Sol Defence Corps occupation. From this point forth, the SDC tested railguns, laser weapons and cluster bombs on the surface of Mercury in order to measure their range, destructive capability and overall functionality as weapons. This caused the upper hemisphere of Mercury to become dotted with large man-made craters, scorch marks and long strips of glassed rock. There were a total of twelve weapons testing sessions taking place on the surface of Mercury, and there have been none more since.
The use of Mercury's surface for weapons testing has caused widespread backlash and outrage amongst the populace of Sol, who believe the use of Mercury as a testing ground taints it's ancient history and appearance, though these protests have been primarily in vain.

Venus, also known as Sol II, is the second planet from Sol and the 7th largest planet in the Solar System. It famously has the densest atmosphere of all the terrestrial planets, appearing a stark white nearly everywhere but it's terminator, and being the only inhabited plane to orbit inferiorly to Earth, alongside being the brightest object in the night sky (other than Sol and Luna) garnering it a reputation in many cultures throughout human history and persisting to the late 21st century. Venus is the home of five colossal platforms which are large, floating cities that rest above the hostile, acidic atmosphere and provide habitation. Established on December 9th, 2067, the Colonial Administration of Venus, abbreviated as CAV, governs Venus' population of 4.7 million.
Venus and it's population hold a reputation of decadence second only to that of Earth itself, firstly living on trillion-credit platforms on the bleeding edge of science, alongside hosting many commercial entities both interplanetary corporate alongside entertainment, fashion and other retail commerces, expensive real estate on the basis of the Venusian sights, and the single largest gambling identity and economy in the entirety of Sol, beating out Earth entirely. This reputation has garnered Venus the nickname of 'space vegas' in light of their immense gambling. During the Martian Revolution, while Earth became the Martian symbol of oppression, Venus became the Martian symbol of corruption.

Venus' surface is exceptionally hostile and inhospitable to human life, bearing thick, toxic clouds and scorching temperatures. As such, the colony bases on Venus instead sit far above the surface in enormous floating cities. These cities, oftentimes referred to as "Platforms", rest buoyantly in the sky from helium stored in massive tanks encircling the perimetres of the platforms, whilst also simultaneously being tied to the ground by multiple 5-inch-thick composite cables buried 152.4 metres into the surface.The architecture of such cities had adopted a style of their own, having curved, sleek towers that appear like wisps of smoke; such architecture has made the colonies of Venus look almost alien compared to the geometric buildings present on Earth.
The Colonial Administration of Venus (CAV) serves as the governing authority of Venus. It is headed by two consuls, who lead the planet and it's government. The two consuls have equal power, and any disputes between them are solved by the consuls as well as the senate proposing at least 1 solution. Afterwards, a vote is held wherein the Venusian people decide the solution that is put into place.
The CAV has 3 houses of government, the Administration, Justice, and Senate houses. The Administration house includes the consuls, governors, and their advisors. The Justice house consists of the Jurist and six Justices that are elected to their positions. The Senate house has a total of 25 senators as of 2114. Every platform each elects 5 senators, and the total count is increased by 5 for every new platform. A senator can run a total of 2 times, with each term being 2 years. Citizens over the age of 28 earth years can propose a bill, as well as either of the consuls. Bills are voted on each month by Venusian citizens, and if a bill is popular enough, it will be brought unto the senate where they shall vote on it's fate. For a bill to become law, it needs 3/4 of the senate to support it, or at least 20 supporting senators as of 2114.

Extensive climate change over the course of the 21st century has caused a variety of changes in human society: city living has become exceedingly common as the natural order has begun to experience extreme shifts, weather patterns have become drastic and sea levels have risen, forcing many out of their homes. The climate change on Earth is what sparked the rapid colonization of the Sol system and migrations to planets such as Mars, which was colonized in the 2040s.
Despite the exodus of millions from the planet, it still possesses a population of over 10 billion people and unparalleled political and economic power.

Earth has been estimated to be 4.543 billion years old, with human civilization having begun around 3000 BCE, with human civilization having estimated to have existed for around 350,000 years. Though small compared to the lifespan of the entire Earth, humanity has still managed to irreversibly change the Earth and colonise the entire Sol system, and other planets in the far reaches of space. During the 21st century, in what was called the Information Age, the pace of technology had greatly accelerated causing humanity to quickly advance and also speed up climate change on Earth. As overpopulation and extreme weather posed a threat to human livelihood, the Space Age began with a mission to colonise Mars. In 2027, the first humans stepped foot on Mars, which marked the beginning of the Space Age. Soonthereafter in 2048, Mars established it's first colony and quickly became the largest colony - to the point where the Martian people, seeking autonomy from the UN, started the Martian Revolution.
With the colonisation of Mars came the colonisation of Venus, then Jupiter, and then the rest of the Sol system. In 2090, with the formation of the Final Frontier Project, missions were send out past the Oort Cloud seeking extrasolar habitable planets. The FFP brought back numerous results, establishing colonies on planets such as Homestead, and later, planets such as Concordia.

Mars, also known as Sol IV, is the fourth planet from the Sun, the second most-populous inhabited planet in Sol and the first proper planet to be colonized by humanity. First touched down in 2031 and later colonized in 2048, the planet is home to a bustling population of both migrants and native-born citizens living in a combination of domed cities and partially-underground complexes. Mars is governed by the Colonial Administration of Mars (CAM), who appoints a Governor for the planet as well as a deputy governor for each of Mars' eleven districts. Over the seventy years of its colonial habitation, Mars' population has developed a fledgeling cultural and socioeconomic identity, priding hard work and resourcefulness owing to its rough start as a remote colony world.
Besides being the hallmark of mankind's colonization efforts, it is also infamous for its political history: tensions of economic exploitation and biased governance led to the secession of the planet from United Nations rule and the outbreak of the Martian Revolution.

Mars possesses no atmosphere, but has been shown to have formerly supported life and a large, thriving ecosystem prior to humanity through fossil uncovering and signs of erosion and former lakebeds across the surface of Mars. The Martian ecosystem and any life it once held are all since gone, leaving behind only a barren, desert planet. The first colonies on Mars were established in 2048 under the Martian Settlement Initiative, and over a long period, the Martian people had experienced a massive population boom of close to 5 million permanent residence and developed a distinction from Earth humans. In 2087, exploitation of Mars and the Martian people who had worked to become their own people despite hardship as the first isolated colony lead, firstly, a political divide on Mars between Sol loyalists and Martian separatists, which lead later to the Martian people seceding from the Colonial Administration of Mars and establishing the Martian Commonwealth through a government coup on March 12th at the hands of militamen.
Over a 7-year war, the first interplanetary war fought by humanity, Peacekeeper Corps and Sol Defence Corps, inexperienced at the time went head-to-head with Martian revolutionaries. The war ended in a United Nations victory through the use of unorthodox battle tactics and a focus on information and cyberwarfare.
Today, Mars is governed through a complex municipality system not present in any of the other colonies such as Venus or Jupiter, possessing eleven distinct districts each with elected municipal governments which possess their own semi-autonomy.

Jupiter, known rarely as Sol V, is the fifth planet from Sol and the largest planet in the solar system, two times more massive than the combined mass of all other planets in the solar system. Jupiter is one of the most politically important planets in Sol alongside the planets of Earth and Mars, being the heart of new-age space industry, hosting multiple anchorages and being something akin to a checkpoint for arrivals and departures to and from Sol and possessing huge gas and mineral mining operations on Jupiter's surface and on their numerous asteroid moons. Prior to efficient space travel, Jupiter was especially notable for it's immense gravitational pull which allowed ships to use the slingshot method to reach either end of the solar system with Jupiter as a midway point.
Jupiter is governed by the Colonial Administration of Jupiter (CAJ) under the supervision of the United Nations. The more established of the moons possess their own colonial administrations, such as the Colonial Administration of Europa (CAE), Colonial Administration of Ganymede (CAG) and the Colonial Administration of Callisto (CAC), governing the main three Galilean moons and are under the overarching authority of the CAJ. Residents of Jupiter are referred to under the demonym Jovian.
Information
Jupiter was colonized not long after Mars, with Gordon Britt and Arthur Hendrix, colonial stakeholders in the UN, proposing Jovian colonisation to the UN for a variety of reasons; Jupiter held lucrative potential for expansion across Sol, with gas mining from the planet itself combined with a planet that could be utilised as a base of operations for Asteroid Belt mining operations. Additionally, the majority of research relating to Jupiter and the Galilean moons had been receiving negligible results as of the time, and establishing a permanent space station would allow scientists to more efficiently research the gas giant and it's moons. The operation was greenlit in 2060, and the Jupiter Expedition made it's maiden voyage on December 18th, utilising a perfect opportunity in which the Martian aphelion and the Jovian perihelion allowed the expedition to reduce it's duration by a year. When the Jupiter Expedition fleet arrived at the gas giant on September 4th, 2063 and established the first geosynchronous station - the Britt-Hendrix station. Jupiter and the Galilean moon were under SDC blockade for 5 years before it was lifted in 2068, which opened the floodgates for countless enterprising corporations and individuals seeking to make a profit off of the lucrative mining, research and manufacturing capabilities of the newly established Jovian colonies.
Today, Jupiter holds massive political influence over manufacturing, being the largest manufacturing sector in Sol, alongside influence over transit throughout Sol as all arrivals and departures from the inner to the outer system, alongside transit to extrasolar colonies, pass through Jupiter as a midway point. The sphere of influence which the Colonial Administration of Jupiter possesses is referred to as the 'Jovesphere' and includes the majority of the Asteroid Belt, Jupiter and Saturn.

First orbited by the United Nations Ringwatcher I Expedition on 20 August 2078, repeated Ringwatcher expeditions sent by the UN Colonial Development Office (CDO) throughout the 2080s established permanent infrastructure in Saturnian orbit, as well as on the moons of Titan, Enceladus, Iapetus, and Mimas. Prior to the development of modern fusion propulsion and warp drives, Saturn expeditions required multi-year interplanetary transfers for each journey, preventing long-term human habitation in the Saturnian system until the 2090s. Today, Saturn remains the outer limit of civilian travel in Sol, hosting a transient population of some thousand tourists at any given time, in addition to a vast quantity of Sol Defence Corps personnel.
Saturn's isolation and large reserves of lunar resources allows the gas giant to host the home bases of the 4th and 6th Fleets of the Sol Defence Corps Navy. These installations include SDCSS Temperance, SDCI Collins and SDCI San Martín, sprawling naval dockyards in low orbit of Titan, as well as SDCI Hatta, a research and development facility on the surface of Enceladus, and SDB Titan, a large multipurpose military base on Titan's surface. Both fleets are officially based at SDCSS Temperance, though the scattered nature of both the 4th and 6th Fleets allow for a much smaller portion of vessels docked at home at any given time compared to the rest of the SDCN.
Unlike the much more populous Jupiter, Saturn has no Colonial Administration of its own, and is directly administered by the United Nations' Colonial Administration Assembly through the ad hoc Saturn Colonial Affairs Office (SCAO), located on Earth with satellite branches across the Saturnian system. The current Director of the SCAO is Theio MacHallan.

Uranus and Neptune were both found, on initial survey, to both possess climate phenomena still under research by the NDG. Both of the planets possess natural satellites and magnetospheres. The first treks made to Uranus and Neptune were in 2089, when Naval Development Group ships departed from SDCSS Temperance on Saturn to conduct studies of Uranus and Neptune hoping to gain knowledge on their climate phenomena and unexplained internal heat.
The ships of the NDG remained in the orbit of Uranus for 7 months before making a further trek out to Neptune, which lasted 4 months. During this time the ships mapped the surfaces of Uranus and Neptune, launched disposable probes down into the planets, and studied the anticyclonic Great Dark Spot storms of Neptune. After the voyage, the Naval Development Group starships returned to Saturn and, while Neptune was given thorough attention for many years for it's possession of astatine, Uranus had little to offer other than science and remained in the metaphorical shadow of Neptune for many years.
As the initial rush for Neptune's astatine was cut short by the SDC blockade, Uranus found itself hosting a number of mining stations - countless corporations at least wanted to be near Neptune by the time the blockade was lifted, and made a profit off of hydrogen and helium mining in Uranus' atmosphere. As time went on, it also came to host corporate anchorages, though the process of attaining an outer giant mining permit was a rigorous process - though less rigorous than the Neptunian permit - which deterred some small companies from prospecting, albeit preventing fewer than Neptune would inevitably be able to. Many of the mining stations in Uranus' orbit were towed over to Neptune once the blockade was lifted, leaving the planet with only a third of the mining stations it had prior to the blockade lift. It still remains a large source of hydrogen and helium mining in the Sol system.

In the 2089 survey to the outer gas giants, beneath Neptune's atmosphere was found to host high concentrations of astatine, what was formerly one of the rarest metals known to man and a crucial catalyst in early models, and modern models, of the Dark Matter Handling System. Though incredibly appealing to mining prospectors, the SDC looked to monopolize astatine mining on Neptune if not completely control it - and as such a military blockade was formed on Neptune, however, not Uranus, in 2097.
In 2099, SDCSS Atlantis was towed from Saturn to Neptune and built in geosynchronous orbit with Neptune. It served an anchorage, rest point and observatory for the two gas giants typically manned by 50-150 Sol Defence Corps personnel at a time. Other than it's role as a military outpost, it was also the nerve centre of the quickly-expanding network of mining stations in Neptunian orbit. With wind speeds of up to 2,200 km/h, and with the warmer temperatures at the poles, many aspects all went into mining operations on Neptune becoming extremely profitable, and incredibly easy. Mining prospectors, on the other hand, were outraged. Many were limited to hydrogen and helium mining on Uranus, however, the more pale of the two ice giants did not secretly possess an incredibly rare mineral. Many sought to buy their way in, with ludicrously high offers. However, a combination of the profits the SDC had already been making off of astatine mining on Neptune, alongside the doctrine of ensuring that there would be no competition in the development of the FTL drive, lead to them declining each offer.
Uranus became riddled with mining claims as countless companies wanted quick access to Neptune as soon as the blockade was opened. In 2106, six years after the maiden voyage of the Escapade which bore the first FTL drive publicized in 2100, the Sol Defence Corps officially lifted the Neptune Blockade. Worries of competition in FTL development was a thing of the past - laws put in place by the United Nations prohibited the unauthorized development of FTL drives. As mining companies flocked to Neptune in what was called the astatine gold rush, many found that the long process of obtaining a permit, due to Neptune being under SDC occupation and dangerous mining conditions, deterred smaller mining companies from making claims. As such, only a number of larger companies were able to make a profit - and so they did, with the profits made off of astatine mining rivaled only by the fatality rates of the danger of Neptunian mining.

Pluto is governed by the Sol Defence Corps, hosting the Nereus Port naval outpost for the Sol Defence Corps Navy's Poseidon Fleet and extrasolar transit, hosting the Naval Extrasolar Transport Authority (NETA), a subsidiary company of the Sol Defence Corps which regulates commercial transit between Sol and the colonies. Aside from Jupiter, Pluto acts as one of the main economic and transport hubs for extrasolar endeavours. Pluto does not possess a colonial administration and is directly governed by the Sol Defence Corps and the Naval Extrasolar Transport Authority.

Pluto initially received little attention as a target for colonisation for no reason other than the exorbitant cost to both travel to and establish infrastructure on Pluto during its first potential period for colonisation in 2060. With strides in space transportation, and the planned unveiling of the FTL drive in 2100, the Sol Defence Corps Navy petitioned the United Nations for support in developing a spaceport on Pluto by 2090.
